The City of Boston is divided up into several neighborhoods. There's Boston Proper, the downtown area including Beacon Hill but only refered to as Beacon Hill because thats where all the money lives; East Boston, which is actually north of Boston; there is no North Boston but there is a North End, which is actually north, just below East Boston which is further north; South Boston is sort of west of Boston, not to be confused with the South End, which is sometimes referred to as Lower Roxbury and is actually south of Boston; there is no West Boston, but there was such a thing as the West end, which up until 1965 or so was between Beacon Hill and the North End until it was plowed over and is now Charles River Park. And then there are the areas that you have to be told are part of Boston, like Charlestown, Mattapan, Roxbury, and Hyde Park. Allston/Brighton is also a neighborhood of Boston, which one you are in will depend on the zip code assigned to you by the post office.
Chelsea is not part of Boston, but soon will be. Keep that to yourselves.
