... Gulf War II (He Tried To Kill My Daddy) has put a (miniscule in the grand scheme of things of course, but annoying to me nonetheless) crimp in my plans for this weekend... my friend who was supposed to come up to Boston from the Bay Area this weekend cancelled her trip, she wasn't huge on the idea of flying cross-country via airports that are madhouses to begin with, literally hours after the war started.

can't say I blame her, mind you, but it still sucks.

... and speaking of postponing and cancelling things due to the war... I say, it's up to the participants. if the majority of Oscar attendees are scared shitless of sitting in a huge auditorium for 7 or 8 hours (or however long the show takes), then they should make their feelings known and the Academy should react accordingly.

if the NCAA players don't want to hold huge public events inside huge arenas, ditto.

but if the particpants are okay with everything, then we should be as well. I don't find it "inappropriate" if there's a Hollywood bash or a big game during wartime... hell, I welcome it. nobody is dishonoring the troops by being entertained (and in the participants' cases, doing their jobs)...

the troops want to know that they're missed and loved back home, but life has to go on. life is slightly different during war, but it has to go on anyway.

I'd say it's kinda hilariously arrogant for a bunch of Hollywood glitterati to be worried about it . . . I mean, sheesh, you'd think if terrorists/whoever were going to hit a large gathering, they'd go for something a little more political.

Then again, the world has officially gone insane, so who the hell knows?? Oy vey. --Hag

y'know, the whole "target of psychological impact" thing. besides, it gives "Entertainment Tonight" something to report on besides the Elizabeth Smart rescue... *shudder*

Egggggg-sactly! Yes, war is horrible, yes, people are suffering and dying for their respective countries, yes it's very serious business. But I think what would be inappropriate would be to act as though this conflict is dominating our entire lives. People are far too thin-skinned. The Oscars didn't stop during any other war, it was just toned down a bit to reflect the mood. If people are feeling overwhelmed by the war, then all the more reason to hold a celebration like the Oscars.

the oscars...

The impression I got was that any celebrity objection to the Oscars wasn't so much that they were afraid of any terrorist action, but rather they weren't quite shallow enough to go through it all like there was nothing going on. A significant number of whom have been specifically warned NOT to make anti-war statements.
