food. again.
Feb. 9th, 2004 09:28 pm... I seem to be discovering food a lot lately. I work near Boston's Chinatown, so I often pass through there to get to the T or downtown.
after work today, I was on my way downtown and felt hungry. the best cheap option was a few places that had banh mi (Vietnamese submarine sandwiches) for dirt, dirt cheap. I hadn't had a banh mi in years (grew up in a very multi-ethnic part of Montreal, so I've pretty much tasted most cuisines at least once), so I found a decent-looking place and had a sandwich.
and damn, that was a good, big sandwich for two bucks and change. outside of the Value Menu at burger joints, you can't get much for two bucks these days.
... and continuing on the bargain theme, found a pair of khakis for work at the Eddie Bauer outlet for 10 bucks. it's times like this I'm reminded of a former co-worker of mine (and of
savageknight as well)... he taught me that a) it's ok to be a label snob as long as the stuff's good quality and b) never, ever, pay full retail for clothes. ever.
'cuz you know, you can spend the money you save on better things. like sandwiches.

Date: 2004-02-09 07:52 pm (UTC)I'm near Concordia, to the west, but only around a block and a few more metres from the Hall Building. My apartment is on Maisonneuve basically facing Rue Pierce.
I love the neighborhood, I feel like I'm in the minority being white in my building, and it's a very cool feeling. I mean, the places I've lived before here have certainly been multi-ethnic, but this is quite different. I love the cheap food, too. Walk around the corner for a $.99 falafel. Or across the street, two slices for $2. And I love how I have Lebanese, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, French, North American, Mexican, and Thai food all less than a block away.
Dude... Boston is cool and all... but don't you miss Montreal? I've only lived here a month and don't want to leave...
Lately for a cheap deal I've been rocking $3 steaks from the grocery store. Less than ten minutes to cook and delicious. Since I'm on Atkins I can't do Kraft Dinner to save money anymore, so I'm finding creative ways to save money while eating more meat.

Date: 2004-02-10 05:47 am (UTC)and yup, I definitely miss Montreal... my wife was just as willing to move to Canada, but $$ and immigration meant it made more sense for me to move to Boston. we'll move to Canada at some point I'm sure. :)

Date: 2004-02-10 07:33 am (UTC)If you've never had real ramen, not the instant kind, go. Go go go go go. Now.
And either bring your appetite, or split one with Rox, 'cause they're pretty generous on the portions. It's SUCH good stuff.
