12 years already? wow.
Dec. 6th, 2001 06:31 pm... a few other journals reminded me that today was the 12th anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre. wow, i can't believe it's been that long already. that one hit pretty close to home (literally)... i lived 5 minutes from there at the time, and i was 18 at the time, so some of the women killed weren't much older than i was.
up until then, that was the kind of thing that happened in other cities, not Montreal. never Montreal. one hell of a wake-up call... too bad it took what, fourteen promising lives being snuffed out.
and next august will be the 10th anniversary of the Concordia shootings. i'll make it a point to go to any memorials they have this year... hell, i was there when it happened.
yeah, you read right. while Valery Fabrikant was stalking the engineering department shooting people, i was in a computer lab about 50 feet away. hiding under a desk once i figured out that the loud muffled "booms" i heard... were gunshots.
we all basically hit the floor and stayed there for a bit... once it quieted down, some of us peeked out the door of the lab that was nearest a staircase.
the coast was clear... i just remember running down nine flights and not stopping until i reached the store where my sister worked, about 10 blocks away. i didn't even look back.
unfortunately, i had to a lot over the next year or so. i don't think about that day much, but when i do... :p
makes you think, huh?
