... I yoinked this site from someone on my friends of friends page... Terraserver is a searchable database of satellite pics and topographical maps of the US (most are pretty old, like mid-90s, I presume they don't release the newer ones for security reasons).

they're magnifiable to pretty close... Rox and I were playing with the site this morning and managed to find a few of her previous apartments. and if you ever want to see what the middle of nowhere looks like, find somewhere that's close to the middle of nowhere and pan the map... I found a few spots where there's basically highway surrounded by nothin'.

thus ends my geekery for now.

That is awesome! I saw my house! And my mom's house in rural upstate NY. Heehee! I feel like a spy!

I want to find out when the next pic they'll use is going to be, stand outside, and wave.

i remember finding that site back in the mid 90s. it was pretty cool for a few minutes, but they didnt have too much by the way of lake placid at the time, so i didn't bother much.

[livejournal.com profile] emjayne told me you were cool, so here i am, saying hi and checkin out your ramblings. i dont tend to post often, but i'm a good reader.

also, i've been curious for a while where to get one of those face icons. do you have the link?

if [livejournal.com profile] emjayne says I'm cool, I must be! ;)

and I don't remember where I did the face icon... I always end up following someone else's link and never noting where the page is... :p

yup, cool spy stuff...too bad the database doesn't extend beyond the continental US.
I mean Canada is really big, there have to be some shots of it somewhere. 8-(

I actually looked around one of the border crossings... you had plenty of nothing with a highway in the middle, then you had a rat's nest of small roads and buildings, then a little more nothing to the north, then the picture cuts off. I guess they're only "allowed" to use the pics of the US for those purposes.
