... why do they send you a tracking number for something being shipped UPS Ground? It's not like they scan it repeatedly while it's on the truck... or at all...

I'm expecting a delivery in the next little bit, and it's coming from California. The shipping details thus far:

July 31, 11:30pm Left California
August 1, 2:00am En Route to Massachusetts

Gee, thanks, guys. Couldn't have figured that part out on my own. I'll bet if I look elsewhere on the UPS site, I can see a picture of the very truck carrying my stuff!*

*note: truck may not be the same truck carrying your stuff. UPS has the right to substitute a picture of a truck with other people's stuff. Offer void in Quebec.

I'm of the opinion that the truck should have a GPS that posts its positions to the UPS web servers in realtime.

Ok, maybe that's a security problem, and Bad Guys could abuse that service to steal your stuff. So add in some noise and say that your package was within 30 miles of this latitude and longitude at sometime within the past hour.

And then bring on the ADD folks who keep refreshing to watch their packages near their house.

The logical next step would be to integrate with google earth, so not only can you see the GPS coordinates, you could actually watch it move.

FedEx tracking is better than UPS anyway because UPS takes forever to actually transfer the information to the website. I realize this after ordering a whole bunch of stuff from Apple, and having each piece sent separately, some by FedEx and others UPS. Yay, efficiency!

Does UPS Ground ever hand it off to another truck or another driver at some hub point? That's the only way it would make sense....

Better to know it's been shipped than to wonder if it's sitting in a warehouse somewhere forgotten.
