... oh, Apartment Search 2002 is gonna be a lulu, i tells ya.
i finally got to visit an apartment (actually duplex, but i'll save the whole "what we call various dwellings" discussion for another time, except to say that a duplex is basically two units in one building) this evening. location was decent, apartment itself was decent but a smidgen smaller than i had imagined, and the landlord was, well, a putz.
rule of thumb: when most of what's available in the part of town you're looking at is basement bachelor flats, they'll try to push'em, push'em push'em on you. which he did. and of course, dude makes a point of telling me that dozens of people have already looked at the place.
given the practically-zero vacancy rates this year, no shit. i've visited one place out of at least a dozen ads... the rest were rented out within days... hell, hours of the ad hitting the streets.
my next step is an apartment broker... they're a pretty new concept here, so they don't know that apartment brokers in other cities charge an arm and a leg for their services. this is good for me. :)
hopefully they can line me up some decent options, because i have a little over three weeks to either renew my too-small apartment for another year (oh, joy), or actually find a damn place and gear up to move.
affordable places to live nowhere to be found... huh, when did Montreal turn into Toronto? :p
