... part one of this would be the kid i was next to on the bus after work earlier today. two eleven(ish) year-olds, let's call them "good cop" and "bad cop". basically, bad cop wanted to pull all sorts of obnoxious shit, which good cop would try (unsuccessfully) to talk him out of.
the kid would talk back to anybody, a really sassy smart-ass type. he threw an empty paper bag out the window of the bus, which i thought would satisfy him. when he got ready to throw cucumber slices from his lunch, i stepped in.
i blocked the open window with a newspaper, which of course prompted the kid to ask "what y'all was doing". i then answered that i was "preventing y'all from throwing shit out the window."
at which point the kid accuses me of "making fun of how black people speak" (he was black). "no, i was making fun of how ignorant kids like you speak". after that, a few other people around us joined in chastising the kid, who looked to be properly chagrined by the time i got off.
of course, he'll probably go home and kick puppies. but hey, i did my small part in shaping a young mind.
... strange coincidences: i've been listing my apartment at a few college housing offices, putting up ads on strategic bulletin boards, etc for the past few days.
i got my first reply today, someone who saw it at my alma mater's housing bank.
said person works at the same company i do. go figure! the name wasn't familiar, but knowing me, i'll probably recognize her if she comes to see the apartment.
... reading list to be posted tonight or tomorrow.
