... back to work today for the first time in over 2 weeks. meh.

and i've already been warned that i'll be spending most of the day calling our computer helpdesk... we upgraded computers and went to Windows XP during my absence, and pretty much everybody had some problems getting their systems up to speed the first day. whee.

oh well, at least, I, uh, have access to good coffee. yeah, that's it.

Patrick explained this to me just the other day. He said that the reason the rest of Canada gets a Civic Holiday is because Quebec gets St. Jean Baptiste Day and the rest of Canada was pissed because Quebec got an extra holiday so they gave themselves a Civic Holiday. I can't imagine Quebec ever doing anything that pissed off the rest of Canada... ;-)

Interesting theory - I wonder how much is truth and how much is Quebecois bravado ;) But I know not every province takes today as a holiday - on PEI they have a holiday in July for Lobster Fest, if you can believe it. I was surprised as all get out when I moved there and they told me that. In Ontario, today is Simcoe Day, in New Brunswick it's New Brunswick Day (very original of them don't you think?) Hell, even here we don't HAVE to take today off - we could have Remembrance Day off instead if the majority of people at our company wanted. But of course, we'd all rather have a long weekend in the summer rather than late fall.

Simcoe? I had an uncle in Simcoe, ON! All my cousins were raised in Simcoe. No one's left there anymore though - uncle has passed on and all my cousins live in Greater Toronto.

hee hee, it's true! I'm not sure if the whole province gets the day off, but Summerside did. There's a big parade and everything. It's hilarious.

nope... we get June 24 for St. Jean Baptiste day, so the rest of Canada gets good ol' Civic Holiday to make up for it.

Ha!

You can't take all the credit...

"In Canada, the first Monday in August is generally a holiday but it is known by different names in different areas.
The idea of a holiday in the middle of summer in Toronto dates back to 1869. This day was created in 1875 and the first Monday in August became the August Civic Holiday."

Hey, I'm just talkin facts here, buddy...St Jean Baptiste day wasn't declared an official stat holiday until 1976. 1875...1976...you do the math ;)

That's the general name for the holiday, each province has it's own name. Ours is called Simcoe Day.

Quebec doesn't observe it... the other provinces adopted it to compensate for Quebec getting St-Jean Baptiste as a holiday on June 24.
