just a "five"
Sep. 12th, 2002 06:31 pmnot an official Friday Five, just five questions. inspired by a phone convo with my one and only
rdcf the other night, who promises to take me to a Barenaked Ladies concert as soon as she can...
What was the first concert you ever attended?
Lawrence Gowan and Glass Tiger, at the Verdun Auditorium in August 1987. Two Canuck acts in a hockey rink... I think I get extra Canadian points for that one!
What was the best concert you've seen?
For sheer entertainment, Bon Jovi at the Montreal Forum in 1989, Skid Row opening... for a 17-year-old growing his hair down past his shoulders, that was as good as rock got!
For absolute spectacle, George Michael, 1988, Olympic Stadium. Fifty-eight thousand people, biggest show I've been to in my life. Came home hoarse, half-deaf, and loved every minute.
...the worst?
I'm going to get flamed for this one, but I fell asleep at a Dave Matthews Band show a few years back. I didn't really know their stuff, a friend had invited me. And I'm sorry to say, they didn't do a thing for me.
Honorable mention goes to Terrence Trent D'Arby, who opened for Duran Duran at the Forum in '94(ish). Ever seen someone get heckled in an arena concert? Ever seen a dead-silent arena? This was a textbook case of someone trying to stretch their one hit way further than they should have.
And I won't count the Faith No More/Metallica/Guns'n'Roses debacle in '92 at the Big O, because it wasn't a complete concert... James Hetfield of Metallica catching on fire from a pyro during his show, a four-hour break, followed by Axl Rose taking a hissy fit and ending the show after four half-assed songs, followed by a riot, does not a concert make.
Ever followed a band around? Seen them more than some of their family members?
I've seen the above-mentioned Gowan 13 times.
Accidentally once... one time on a camping trip, we went to a second campsite after we didn't like our original pick. Said site (in Kingston, ON) was hosting a folk festival. We missed Moxy Fruvous headlining the previous night (damn!), but Gowan, go figure, was headlining the night we actually stayed at the site.
Second place? Holly Cole, three times. I'd watch and listen to her read the phone book if they sold tickets.
What shows are on your wish list?
In no particular order... Shania Twain, Barenaked Ladies, Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley (young, living Elvis), Metallica (see above)... I'm sure there are others, but those are who come to mind.

Date: 2002-09-12 05:28 pm (UTC)And a friend of mine saw Metallica. Apparently it was a great experience being in a crowd of people waving fists and screaming, "Die! Die! Die!" ;)
